HISTORY COMES ALIVE IN
MALACCA

Don’t let the state of Malacca fool you. Its small size packs a punch in delivering a fantastic and bedazzling combination of old-world and new style. As the first recorded state in Malaysian history, with a Golden Age to come with it, Malacca carries the very foundations of Modern Malaysia in its grounds.

A trip to Malacca is not complete without visiting the famous attractions that make it unique. Some of Malacca’s top places of interest are listed below.

HISTORICAL MONUMENTS
You would definitely want start your trip with the historical sites (as there are plenty of them to choose from). The A’ Famosa Fort gate (Porta de Santiago), one of the oldest landmarks in Malaysia, is a sight often associated with Malacca and acts as an ode to the Portuguese influence in Malaccan history. The Stadthuys, which means the Municipal Town Hall in Dutch, is the biggest and oldest Dutch building in Southeast Asia, and is conveniently located in the Malacca Town Square. In the vicinity is Christ Church, the famous red church of Malacca, and Queen Victoria’s fountain, which you can visit on a self-guided walking tour of the area. If you haven’t satisfied your appetite for areas of historical significance, there are many more sites to choose from and explore.

JONKER STREET & THE BABA-NYONYA HERITAGE MUSEUM
We all love to do some retail therapy once in a while. Antique shopping is becoming quite a trend these days, and Malacca is debatably the heart of antique shopping in Malaysia.

Pay a visit to the splendid Jonker Street during the evening to see it in its full splendour. Stalls selling antiques and souvenirs of Peranakan heritage are abundant here. You may also find great restaurants scattered in the area. The Jonker Street Night Market is only open on Friday (6pm – 10pm), Saturday and Sunday (11am – 10pm). Do note that vehicles are not allowed through the road, so if you are driving there, remember to park a slight distance away.

Before you adjourn to Jonker Street, you could spend your time learning about Peranakan or Baba-Nyonya heritage, which is native to the Malay archipelago. Located at No. 48-50 along Jalan Tun Cheng Lock in Malacca, the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum is a collection of three beautifully restored houses arranged to look like a typical 19th-century Baba-Nyonya residence. Guided tours are available, with the guides regaling guests with Baba-Nyonya tales of yore in entertaining fashion during the informative 45-minute tour. The opening hours and address are as below.

Opening Hours :
Mondays – Saturdays
10:00 – 12:30
14:00 – 16:30

Address : 48-50 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, 75200 Malacca
